The Hook and Line

The Hook and Line is causing a stir behind the bar with summer's hottest rum cocktails

True to the City’s naval roots The Hook & Line is home to Plymouth’s first speciality rum bar, serving over 75 versions of every sailor’s favourite tipple! The bar is the heart of the venue and owner, Steve Page’s real area of expertise.

It was way back in 1655 that this sugar cane spirit, locally made in the West Indies, was ordered to replace the official beer ration of the Navy. When the Admiral of the fleet sailed from Jamaica, he discovered that rum remained naturally sweeter in the cask much longer than water or beer. From here it became the life-blood of the Royal Navy and no doubt, over the years, many a rum ration has been swigged within the walls of Royal William Yard.

Steve is keeping up the tradition and says: “Rum certainly has a dark past, it’s also been associated with pirates, devils and had status as a revolutionary spirit. In recent years the spirit has been reawakened with rum distillers around the world shaking up its reputation, playing with spices and flavours that we think will turn the head of any committed gin enthusiast!”

Made from sugar cane and molasses, rum is most associated with the famous Mai Tai and Mojito, you’ll find these firm favourites, with an extra twist, on the Hook & Line menu and a whole lot more. As well as a selection of the most scrumptious world rums, Steve’s sourced some wonderful local treasures including Devon Rum from the Devon Rum Company - a little less sweet, than other spiced rums, by omitting the vanilla, the flavours of clove, aniseed and cinnamon shine through, leaving a rich caramel molasses finish.

A must try on the menu is the Rum and Reason, mixing Havana rum and Martini Rosso, with Pedro Ximinez and House Bitters for a simple short cocktail with punch! And not to be missed, The Rum-azing Rainbow, a delightful mix of Seawolf white rum, Blue Curacao, grapefruit sherbet and pink lemonade. Launched in June to celebrate Gay Pride, the colours of pink and blue represent the transgender and non-binary community and this super sweet cocktail was so popular it will remain on the specials throughout summer.

Steve went on to say: “Rum-azing Rainbow is our summer recommendation. It reflects The Hook & Line completely - inclusive, individual and proud of who we are! We’re looking forward to a summer of serving up a mix of the best food, cocktails and service that Plymouth has to offer.”

As well as the finest rum, there’s also a specially selected wine list, Perrier Jouët champagne, cocktails are on point and you can enjoy The Hook & Line’s very own, smooth, signature ale, the Hook, Line & Sinker.
