Identical twins serving feel good food that benefits the mind, body and planet

Cosmic Kitchen, which started as a pop-up in Plymouth in 2019, recently received the top accolade of No1 Vegan Spot in the UK and 3rd in the World from TripAdvisor.

Identical twins serving feel good food that benefits the mind, body and planet. Below, the Cosmic Kitchen girls talk about their vegan journey.

Hey it’s Gabriela & Lucia here! We are identical twin sisters from Plymouth who run Cosmic Kitchen plant-based restaurant.

Our simple ethos "GOOD MOOD FOOD" means that we love serving you nutritious, feel good food that benefits the mind, body and planet. We believe that food has the ability not just to fuel, but to heal and improve your quality of life - we are on a mission to show people how awesome, easy and life changing following a plant based diet can be!

Our Plymothian heritage goes back countless generations but through our Cypriot father we were introduced to the Mediterranean diet at a young age. This cuisine is typically focussed on Mezze – a traditional Mediterranean meal with a lot of different dishes.

While mezze often contains a lot of meat and cheese based courses, the Greek cuisine also involved a lot of fresh salad, fruit and grains. Our passion for great food took us both to catering college in Plymouth, and eventually to The Four Seasons in Cyprus, where we worked as chefs into our early twenties. It wasn't until we moved home that our best friend introduced us to the concept of veganism - this is when we started to experiment with a more plant-based diet. Both trained chefs, we were always interested in learning new ways to cook and we were curious to see what kind of recipes we could adapt to suit a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle.

We were also part of the operational team that launched Marco Pierre White's Steakhouse in Plymouth. A great experience in opening an operation and one that gave us time to reflect, leading to a New Year's resolution we switched to a vegetarian diet. Both wanting to maintain a happier, healthier lifestyle. Less than a year in and we had both made a full transition into a vegan lifestyle. We’ll be honest - it doesn’t happen overnight and everyone can do it at their own pace, but what we did both find out was that once we had taken meat and dairy out of our diet we felt SO much better. We had tons more energy, our sleeping habits improved and we didn’t feel sluggish after eating anymore! (No more after dinner snoozes). The benefits were clear to us and we haven’t looked back!

“The key to living a happier, healthier life is inside us. Our gut is almost as important to us as our brain or our heart, yet we know very little about how it works” This quote was taken from the book “Gut” by Giulia Enders . It was through reading this book, on a recommendation from a family member that we made the connection between our gut health and how the foods you eat can really affect your mood.

When we consider the connection to the brain from the gut. It’s important to know that 90% of serotonin receptors (often called the “FEEL GOOD HORMONE”) are located in the gut. A whole food plant based diet can have such positive effects on your gut health and mood.

You’ve probably heard the phrase “you are what you eat” It’s so true! Everyone of your cells is replaced in about seven years and your food is what those new cells are made from. So take a good look at what’s on your plate, it’s about to be a part of you.

A vegan diet contains only plants (such as vegetables, grains, nuts and fruits) and foods made from plants. Vegans do not eat anything that comes from or is a by-product of an animal, this means no dairy products and eggs. You can get all of the nutrients you need from eating a varied and balanced vegan diet. The supermarkets over the last few years have introduced so many vegan meat alternatives  including "chicken kievs", pizzas, a large selection of vegan cheese, vegan mayo, chocolates, sweets, ice cream, pies , pasties, sosage rolls, plus loads more. So if you think you might miss out if you want to try a vegan lifestyle, you wont! Trust us

Creativity and entrepreneurial spirit run through our DNA. We are from the Plymothian family that founded the legendary Van Dike Club, which introduced a rock'n'roll hall of fame to the region from the late 60's and through the 70's. Decades later our parents set up Plymouth's Club Fandango and our father is  also involved in creating cabaret venue Annabel's. Lucia's passion for veganism & cooking alongside Gabriela's passion for DJ'ing & creating music has created a multi functioning venue which operates as a cafe/ deli during the day and a bar/ music venue on the weekends

The Evangelou Twins have become DJs, with Gabriela gaining a residency at the South West's biggest house and techno event, Casa, whilst sibling Elani is an active singer/songwriter, well known and admired on the Plymouth scene.
